Original New Zealand designer garments hand made by Nelson fibre artist and weaver Sue Bateup in her riverside studio, Weavers Gallery.

When visitors to Sue Bateup's Nelson studio ask her where the intriguing colours of the woven garments come from, she points to a cone of undyed wool on the shelf. It's a dramatic and fun statement, typical of this irrepressible textile designer. Inspiration comes from the colours of Aotearoa - New Zealand.

Sue Bateup's exclusive hand woven garments and accessories are stylish apparel items of quality and originality. Sue's customers often return for more and bring their friends. The long lasting nature of the handwoven garments are a rarity in today's throw-away society.

"My passion is for textiles that can be both beautiful and functional. It is wonderful to surround ourselves with beautiful things that we use constantly as part of our daily lives."

The fibres are pure and natural wool, possum, merino, silk and mohair. No two garments are alike as Sue hand dyes then weaves this yarn into the fabric from which the garments are created. This results in each one being unique. Bags, and mohair and wool scarves are dyed to coordinate with the garments.

Sue has a Diploma in Textile Design and a passion for the quality and uniqueness of handwoven fabric. She has developed a range of garments which are classic in style, yet the unusual fabric makes them distinctive.
